Professional Background

Biography:

Mr. Maxwell joined ETG in the summer of 2020.  Prior to that time, Mr. Maxwell served as General Counsel to a large Dallas based real estate development and private equity firm.  As in-house counsel, Mr. Maxwell had primary responsibility for legal oversight of the company’s retail, self-storage, multi-family, and private equity business units. In that role, he negotiated, oversaw, and often handled himself nearly every aspect of hundreds of real estate transactions, including acquisition, finance, development, corporate structure, construction, leasing, and disposition.  Additionally, as in-house counsel, Mr. Maxwell oversaw all company HR, compliance, litigation, insurance, and corporate affair matters.  The multifaceted experience created for Mr. Maxwell a truly unique point of view, allowing him a terrific familiarity with not only multiple areas of the law, but also real-life practical business experience.

Prior to going in-house, Mr. Maxwell spent over eight years with two AmLaw 50 law firms where he maintained a unique hybrid real estate practice as both a transactional attorney and litigator.  As outside counsel, his clients included lenders, borrowers, developers, servicers, landlords, and tenants. During the recession, he represented lenders in default situations: workouts; restructuring; and foreclosure sales.  In the courtroom, he argued and won disputes involving loans, leases, receiverships, guarantors, garnishments, lien disputes, and title complaints. Additionally, he handled labor disputes and several criminal warrants and subpoenas on behalf of Fortune 100 companies. He also developed a working knowledge of the mortgage-backed security industry on both the residential and commercial side in matters involving servicers, insurers, bond holders, and trustees.

Mr. Maxwell is an active member of the Texas Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Association, the North Texas chapter of the Urban Land Institute, and serves on the board of the SMU Catholic Campus Ministry.  Mr. Maxwell received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame, where he studied political science and pre-medicine.  He received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law.  Mr. Maxwell is a Dallas native and proud father of four.
